Why

Release plans assure intent and desired outcomes are accurate throughout the System of Delivery. Teams must be able to plan for a release about a quarter long that provides high value and is reasonable and attainable. Inputs taken into account during release planning include dependencies, sequencing, and capacity.

How

The Epic Roadmap provides direction to the Product Line and Delivery Teams as they refine the work in their backlog. They can use the Roadmap to help prioritize Features and User Stories and understand how the work they are doing aligns with organizational strategy.

Using the knowledge of capacity and velocity for the Delivery Teams, the Product Line Team is able to fairly confidently layout a plan for a release about 3 months in advance. There are a number of techniques that can be used for this planning, the most important part of the release planning process is transparency and communication. All known Risks and Dependencies should be clear and teams are able to mitigate or schedule around them.

As the release date nears, the Product Line Team, in collaboration with the Delivery Team needs to determine if the deployment is ready to go. The status of the work required for the release should be documented and the Product Orchestrator should hold a Go/No-Go meeting within a few days of the release. If a No-Go decision is made, the appropriate people need to be brought in to understand why and help determine if anything can be done to get back on track. If not, teams must look for a new date.

Success Criteria

  • Release plans are established at a cadence sufficient to provide feedback and options to the business
  • Release plans are able to move code to production effectively without rework / missing expectations communicated
